Chaya Czernowin
Composer (b. 1957)
The use of metaphor is central to Chaya Czernowin’s music; she uses it as a means to organizine an unusual sound universe and to escape all convention. Metaphors are used throughout her work on sound and its physical parameters such as weight or texture (smooth or rough, for example) to create sound entities that “live” in a field where perspectives and distances transform. They are seen in the exploration of the musical energy of nature, of musical time and its development, and through the changes in scale and point of view. These aspects all contribute to “peeling” familiar objects to reveal the essential hidden within.
